Division Faculty Given National Award

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center psychiatrist Steven E. Locke, MD was awarded the "Ronnie Stangler" Award for Innovation by the American Association of Technology in Psychiatry (AATP), an affiliate of the American Psychiatric Association, at their annual meeting held in Washington DC on May 3rd, 2008. The AATP Technology Innovation Award is presented to "individuals who have shown creativity and innovation in applying technology to the practice of psychiatry and medicine."

"The decision of the awards committee was based on Dr. Locke's initiative in organizing and running the Summit on Behavioral Telehealth which we see as an important venue to educate and generate discussion about important issues in psychiatry." said AATP Executive Director Robert Kennedy. The annual Summit on Behavioral Health was organized by Dr. Locke as the program chair assisted by other Harvard faculty members who served on a program advisory committee, including BIDMC's Dr. Charles Safran, Chief of the Division of Clinical Informatics, Dr. Warner Slack, who co-founded the Division along with Dr. Howard Bleich, and Dr. Lawrence Lifson in the BIDMC Department of Psychiatry.

The Inaugural Summit on Behavioral Telehealth was held in June, 2007 and was so successful that it will again be held this June 2nd - 3rd at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School. The Summit focuses on the intersection of innovative health technologies, disease management, and behavioral change and addresses the need for greater integration of behavioral health into primary care and the management of chronic medical conditions and preventive medicine (see www.tcbi.org for more information). The summit features nationally and internationally known experts on behavioral telehealth and many local HMS faculty will be presenting.
